Coliban Water Project

The Coliban Water project in Bendigo (Victoria) included the design, construction, installation and commissioning of 17 measurement structures with automatic sensors and data loggers. Over a period of seven weeks, David Mottershead, Alex Vesic and David Griffin completed the installation and commissioning of these sites.

The Coliban Water system supplies Bendigo and an area extending 30 kilometres East to West and 100 kilometres North to South. The system was designed by Joseph Brady and was built between 1873 and 1877.

These before and after shots were taken on the site inspection in August and at completion in November 1997.

Before After
We turned this... into this with a little help from an earth works company.
We also used Reno Mattress's to keep the channel clear from any further land slip and tree growth.

Before After
Old wooden weir baffles. New more accurate aluminium weir.

Instrumentation system
Operational site showing the floatwell system with instrument housing mounted above.

New Weir
4.5m Stainless Steel weir
This shot shows only a trickle of water flowing over the weir, with staff gauge plate on the right bank and instrument housing mounted on a treated pine frame on the left

Before After
Strong winds would disrupt readings.. So some mesh and a frame were added to diffuse them.

Fun Part
Time out for a swim in Bendigo during spring.
