Physical Modelling

Kerb Inlet Model

The kerb inlet model is a 1:2.5 scale model of a section of roadway fitted with a gutter inlet grate. Various designs of grating can be tested to achieve the most efficient water capture under different flow conditions.

A general view of the model, the bed can be tilted in two directions to simulate different slopes and camber of roads. View of the bed of the model with water level sensors to record the depth of flow.

Flow input header tank. V-Notch weir flow meter
Water is introduced from tank fitted flow diffusers to ensure a uniform distribution across the model. The proportion of water captured by each grate design is measured by recording the level of flow over a 'V' shaped weir plate.
